So this is my first attempt at a double nickel story. As I’ve detailed before on this site, strict word counts often give me trouble. “One Day at a Time” is a reminder that, like the apocryphal maybe-Hemingway story about baby shoes, the shortest of short stories lend themselves well to tragedy. I apologize in advance for this.
Kyle and Emily married young, laughing and loving as only the young can. They ignored the lump because the young are invincible.
Regret poisoned Emily’s long life one day at a time. She hoarded memories at first, their recollected joy later curdling to resentment.
Kyle came to her in death. Raging, she sent him away.
