To Con or Not To Con: The Write Question

For years, I’ve gone to conventions all over the continental United States. Some were genre conventions such as MileHiCon, Radcon, and Archon. Others were more media-centric, such as Denver Comic Con and Salt Lake Comic Con. Toss in a World Horror and a few writing conventions such as Superstars Writing Seminars and you’re looking at most of my traveling expenses over the years.

I’ve decided to pull back on the conventions this year. I’m only going to go to two – MileHiCon, because of a series of panels on anthologies that I help to produce with author Sam Knight, and possibly Archon St. Louis. Going to conventions has helped to get my name out there, and I sell enough books to offset some of the costs of traveling. I made quite a few friends along the way, and was able to get on panels with some of the best authors and editors in most of the genres that I write in.

Now it’s time to start getting work out the door. I wrote rough drafts for five novels during NaNoWriMo last November, finally breaking through one million total NaNo words. I am working on getting at least four of my novels finished, polished, and sent to publishers. I’m halfway through two non-fiction books that are new, plus a rewrite of a short handbook that will be republished soon. Add in some short stories for different anthologies and I’m on my way to having my name in at least eight titles this year. If that isn’t enough, I’m working on the artwork for a graphic novel script that I wrote last October.

It’s going to be a very busy year, assuming there are no medical issues.

I’m sure you’ve read authors saying that you just need to sit down and write. This is the year I focus on that task. Hopefully, one of those projects will be the kernel that pops, according to Kevin J. Anderson’s Popcorn Theory of Writing. If one of the projects can get some viral recognition, I’m hoping that the inertia will get my name in front of convention programming directors for the 2017 convention circuit. It would be nice if they were asking me instead of the usual me asking if there were any panel slots available. I’ve been the Guest of Honor for one convention so far, and several others have paid for my hotel. I’d enjoy the opportunity to visit places I haven’t seen yet, and there are still seven states I require to get all fifty — and luckily, I’ve already been to Hawaii and Alaska, although I wouldn’t turn down a return trip.

So, for me, it’s time to put up and shut up. Much of the hard work is done, since I have so many rough drafts to polish and rewrite. If I take breaks from the long works by cranking out several short stories or poems, I expect to increase my title count from the current 47 to well over fifty. Who knows, if I have enough short works, maybe I’ll also put together a collection to get closer to 60 titles to start off 2017.

The Power of the Word Count Tracker

Last year, when January rolled around, I had to face facts: I had to somehow wade through the toughest writing of my career so far—and in record time. The third and final book of The Watchers Chronicle could not wait another spring, another summer, another year. It was summer 2015 or bust. That wasn’t a lot of time to wrap up my most ambitious book to date.

I needed help. I need motivation.

Some other writer on Facebook (I don’t remember who it was) seemed to be in the same boat, and they shared a blog post which espoused the practice of using an Excel-powered word count tracker.

The picture got my attention right away, and I said to myself, I must try this.

That happened on December 30, so I didn’t have much time to waste. I jumped on Excel and did my best to replicate what I’d seen on that timely, heaven-sent blog.

Sixteen weeks later, this is what it looked like:

The essence is that you write down your daily word total—honestly—and color-code your achievements. Maybe only a minority of people will respond to the reward of getting to upgrade the color of a little spreadsheet box, but I am unashamedly one of those people. I would get near to the boundary between yellow and orange, and pick up my pace significantly.

Of course, the color-coded word count tracker only works well when you’re actually writing loads of new words. And by the eighth week of 2015, I finished my first draft and had to jump straight into some heavy editing.

As you may intuit from my picture above, I reworked my spreadsheet to allow me to account for edited words. Two passes are clearly recorded. From Week 8 to Week 12, I focused on cutting as much as possible, since my first draft was about 25,000 words too long. Each day, instead of counting new words, I counted the number of words I had cut. This worked well enough.

Then, in the middle of Week 12, I set upon my final draft proofing, a kind of work no longer conducive to counting cut words. What I did was count the overall number of words I edited in a given day, then halved that number. This produced numbers generally in line with the rest of the chart (this seemed important at the time, because I was also calculating daily and weekly averages).

Though it’s been less than a year, no matter how long I squint at the chart, I can’t quite remember just what exactly I meant by those brown-colored, italicized “750” boxes in the last couple of weeks. I think I was doing edits of polished material, resulting in very high numbers—and in order to keep those numbers in line with the rest of the chart, I just wrote down an arbitrary average. Hence, 750.

Which is kind of dumb, if I think about it too hard.

Anyway, my point is this: I finished my book at the end of Week 16 and entered into a period of extended hibernation—a state with which I suspect most writers can identify. As a result, I abandoned the chart. After entering in a week and a half of black zeros, I finally deleted the shortcut from my desktop and tried to forget this word counter ever existed.

But the word counter was very helpful for the time that I used it, and a part of me greatly regrets that I didn’t carry on with it for a full year.

That’s a goal I hope to achieve if not in 2016, then at some arbitrary 365-day period in the future that doesn’t have to begin and end at the turn of the calendar. Who’s to say you can’t start on February 22? No one. Absolutely no one.

Today I encourage you to keep yourself accountable, even if just long enough to complete an important goal. As for me, I’ll be starting my next first draft in March.

The Customized Writer

Writers are not one-size-fits-all.

That can be the problem with getting writing advice from someone else.  One person’s tried-and-true method is an unstustainable nightmare for another.

Many new writers think they’re “doing it wrong,” or there’s “something wrong with them,” if their chosen mentor’s writing advice doesn’t work for them.

Writing advice is an idea.  A suggestion.  Something to try.  If it works for you, great!  If it doesn’t work for you, put it back in the pot and try something else.

Most writing advice has a nugget of truth in it, a sort of “moral of the story,” and as long as you keep this “moral” in mind, you’ll know both the reason the rule exists, and the times when you need to break it.

Write every day.

The “moral of the story” is to make writing a habit.  Writing careers aren’t born of people who “wait for inspiration to strike” and only get around to actually writing a couple times a year.  But every day?  For some people, it works well to set aside an hour or two in the evening (or morning) every day to write; for me, getting home from 13 hours at work, I’m burned out.  Staying awake to write yielded me 500 words of garbage, and too much fatigue to do well at the next day’s writing.  I’ve done much better going straight to bed after a long day, getting up the next morning on a day off, and writing straight through to dinnertime.  I get more done writing once in two days than I did when I tried to write every day.

I’m still writing regularly.  I’ve still made writing a habit.  But I’m not increasing my fatigue by writing on days when I’m sick, or exhausted from long workdays.  Running myself into illness is not good for long-term productivity.

Finish what you start.

The “moral of the story” is that you can’t sell unfinished works, and generally speaking, this advice is sound.  The writer who’s got 40 partially completed stories on his hard drive, but never submitted anything last year because nothing was done, isn’t learning his craft.

But on the flip side, I know writers who’ve sunk years into struggling to fix a novel that wasn’t working.  If you know you’ll be better off cutting your losses and starting on something new, don’t keep running at the brick wall because a piece of advice makes you feel that you should/must.  Those writers would’ve done a lot better accepting that their first novel was a “trial run” and taking what they’ve learned into a new creation.

My first attempt at a novel reached 100,000 words.  At that point, I was ready to begin Chapter One.

The lesson I learned?  I didn’t have a novel.  I had five protagonists, six plot lines, and three separate series.  I had laid so much ground just establishing the characters, conflicts and setting that I’d run out of book for them to do anything in.

Almost all of the characters and plots in that novel have been “harvested” and used in past and current projects – but not all at once.  That first attempt taught me a lot about writing a tight story arc and focusing a book on one or two main characters.  And I’ve gotten a lot farther using those lessons and re-using those characters and plots than I would have if I were still trying to write my original vision of an epic space opera…and find a market for it.

Get up early each morning and write.

I am the opposite of a morning person.  It takes me a couple hours to wake up enough to not stumble into things, let alone develop the dexterity to type.  There’s no way I’m going to be at my best if I:  get up at 2 am…wait a couple hours to become alert enough to type…start writing at 4 am…be out the door to work at 6.  On this schedule, I’d have to be going to sleep before leaving work if I wanted 8 hours of rest.

If you’re at your best first thing in the morning–then get up each morning and write!  For me, I can produce better work in one hour in the midafternoon than in two in the early morning…and I feel healthier besides.

The “moral of the story” is that the best writing time is when you’re at your most alert and when you’ve got some privacy to focus on your writing.  Find that at the time of day that works for you.

 

By all means, look to your favourite writers to find out what they do.  You might find a new method that boosts your productivity, or an idea you hadn’t thought of before.  But if that tip isn’t working, it’s time to think about why that person uses that tip, and whether there’s a way to adapt it that makes more sense for you.  There is no one way to be a writer.  You need to find the way for you to be a writer–the method that works for your unique needs and style.

And Now for Something Completely Different

When it comes to giving advice regarding plot structure, I have found that most everyone seems to focus on the time from the beginning of the book to the climax. In a way, I completely understand. After all, that’s where the majority of your story happens. However, I find that some people seem to forget that after the climax the story must come to a graceful ending, and that this resolution is as essential to the story as any other part. You’ve made the characters struggle and suffer for their triumph, so they deserve a little time off right?

The denouement is more than just sympathy for a cast you’ve spent years torturing. It’s a matter of practicality. The climax of a story is supposed to be the defining challenge of the protagonists’ life and potentially for the entire world they live in. It doesn’t matter if the story takes a single volume or a twenty part series to tell, once the climax is resolved, the story is done. Young authors need to learn to let go even when, or perhaps especially when, you don’t want to.

I really admire a storyteller who knows when to take their bows and move on to the next work. After all, we are writers people! We are not limited to a single story. Sometimes the best endings for an old story is the beginning of a new one. The more one writes, the better the stories get. Often it is best for our career to work on something else for a while and then return to an old project when the time is right.

Over the past couple years, I’ve been pursuing a deal in traditional publishing. For the first time, I’ve had a story that I knew was good, and that friends who I trust to be honest with me say is near publishable. I’ve devoted all my time and attention to this single story. Not just drafting and editing, but also networking and promoting myself in an attempt to secure a traditional publishing contract. I’ve been obsessed with the idea, and in my attachment forgot to move on.Don’t get me wrong, the story’s not dead to me. I still believe in its potential and will continue to shop it until I find a good home for it. Publishing takes a long time. With eight months to a year between submitting the story and hearing back, I just can’t afford to wait for it anymore. It’s like trying to fish with only one line in the water. You might eventually catch something, but you may be waiting a while for that first bite.

So, in 2016 I’m going to work on something completely different. Up until now I’ve written fantasy, both the sword & sorcery and urban varieties. In order to force myself to grow as a writer, I am trying my hand at a bit of science fiction. So far, it’s been a fun ride and has forced me to rethink many of the assumptions and tropes I had grown used to relying on. Even better, once I finish drafting and polishing this new manuscript, I’ll be able to cast a second line into the pool. Then I’ll start again. And again. Eventually, I’ll get a bite.
